Chronic Wasting Disease: Can you identify the symptoms?

    Chronic Wasting Disease is a degenerative disease that affects deer, moose, and other cervids. It is highly contagious and spreads by contact with infected animals. It is not known to infect humans. Prions shed by infected animals can persist in the environment for years, causing infection.

    Symptoms include excessive drooling, loss of motor function, rapid weight loss, teeth grinding, drooping head, and no fear of humans. It can take years after infection for symptoms to show up.

    You have been tasked with identifying if there is chronic wasting disease present in the state of Virginia. Click on each district to read information about a potential encounter with the disease. For each encounter, determine if the district is contaminated, or if the encounter is a false alarm.
